Situated between a mature oak forest and the coastal sounds of eastern North Carolina, this home occupies a remarkable waterfront setting. Following damage from Hurricane Florence, Toma Farren reimagined the original 1980 homestead with resilience as a guiding principle. Working largely within the existing footprint, the design preserves the elements the clients cherished while transforming the floor plan to accommodate their family of six daughters, including six additional bedroom suites with private bathrooms. The renovation balances the needs of a large family with the clients’ passion for boating and outdoor living, while prioritizing durability and long-term performance in the face of coastal storms.
A refined palette of weathered wood siding and stained brick draws inspiration from the region’s coastal vernacular, allowing the home to blend into its wooded surroundings. The house reveals itself gradually along a winding approach through the oak forest. At the entry, a slatted wood porch reinterprets the traditional entry porches and wood shutters found throughout the nearby coastal town, grounding the home in its local architectural heritage.
A second phase of the project, also designed by Toma Farren, is now underway. Working within the footprint of the existing garage, the addition builds upon the original vision while minimizing its impact on the surrounding landscape and preserving the site’s mature oak trees. The continued evolution of the property reflects a commitment to thoughtful growth, environmental sensitivity, and resilience along the North Carolina coast.
Large sliding doors with screen doors were added to the majority of bedrooms allowing for easy flow for outdoor living with multiple entry points, all while maximizing views and natural ventilation.
The communal living spaces within the house were reorganized and expanded. A generous living room with floor to ceiling views towards the ocean now sits within an exposed structure gabled volume while the relocated kitchen with a generous island, provides the space to entertain.
